No Title Essay

3412 words - 14 pages

A lot of people don’t know what they have until it is gone. Especially when it comes to friends and family. People don’t know when someone will die and they don’t think that our friends or family members can be the victims of a murder. I lost a Close Friend of mines while I was in the 10th grade to the hands of an African American Male whom had a gun. Homicides are a serious issue in the United States of America. In my sociology book it stated that “The United States has one of the highest Homicide Rates of all Industrialized Countries in the world.”
It was July 4th 2010 when I received the news that a close friend of mines was shot and killed in North Minneapolis after leaving a party. A lot Of people of my race (African American/Black) don’t take the time to think and look at how serious and hurtful these crimes are to our race; Especially the Murders, and I believe that this is because we as a people don’t act upon or stand up against these black on black murders the same way we do when the murders involve two different races. For example, Trayvon Martin was an African American Male who was shot down and killed by someone of a different race and on the Star Tribune website they stated on March 12, 2012 on the University of Minnesota’s campus “5,500 people, many in hooded sweats shirts, came to the U to protest Florida Teens Killing.” I’m not saying that the protest wasn’t a good thing, but I am saying that we should have protest like this when the victim and the perpetrator are both African American.
In my Seeing and writing 4 book Ta-Nehisi Coates quoted Bill Cosby who said “Men? Men? Men? Where are you men?” (447). in the first four months of this year alone, there have been 100 homicides of blacks in the state of Illinois. The reason why I am bringing this up is because this isn’t making news like the Travyon Martin case did and it’s shocking to me because we as a people are not standing up or marching for this. A lot of people outside of Illinois don’t even know that this is going on. And I blame this on the news because they are not pushing these stories hard enough, but I also blame us as a people because we are not forcing them or acting like we care about the black on black murders in Illinois and other states. For example this year on January 30th a fifteen year old girl by the name of Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed while she was at a park with some friends. The young girl had performed at the inauguration in Washington for President Obama just a week before. The reason why I bring this story up is because, just like Travyon Martin, this young lady wasn’t bothering anyone. She was approached by a male who had a gun just like Travyon was and was killed, but this story isn’t making headlines like the Travyon Martin case did. I don’t see people marching, protesting or talking about it like the Travyon Martin case is being talked about. Granted the police still haven’t found the killer of Hadiya Pendleton, but that should be even...

He had to go against his society. He stood up for his opinions, even when people were telling him they were no good. Think about it: if Upton Sinclair had not voiced his opinion, there could still be inadequate standards of human rights and food preparation.
