In order for Nokia to sustain their competitive advantage within the industry, the company had to create additional value-added features and services to its mobile device industry. Starting from cameras, to maps, internet, gaming and media applications to video and music, Nokia had to add value to its products by providing convenience, simplifying the devices and providing innovation. Nokia added these additional services and features to be able to stay in line with their vision, which involves a world where everybody is connected. Nokia mainly adopted a horizontal corporate level strategy. The company has used mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures to gain the competencies needed to provide consumers with all the features I previously mentioned and to create high-quality products. A few examples of how the company has implemented this strategy are represented by the major acquisitions that happened in 2008, when Nokia bought 52% of Symbian, the rest of it was already own by the firm. Symbian provided the operating system that is used on most mobile devices manufactured by Nokia. The acquisition was meant to provide the company with even more advanced applications for the mobile devices, the system allowed modifications of pre existing applications so that basically Nokia could create a custom-designed software which met most of buyers needs.
