Mars, the planet once homed by the Doctor’s archenemy ice warrior is now on its way of becoming human’s safe haven.
Mars, the Fourth planet away from Sun, second smallest planet in solar system is known for its similarities to earth. Immigration to an alien planet is no longer a cliché subject for science fictions but has gradually become a serious scientific topic and project. Among the reasons behind tide of immigration to Mars, environmental problems stand out.
Just as Christian Parenti pointed out in his book Tropic of Chaos, the environmental problem, especially climate change is happening faster than we predicted. The growing number of extreme weather events suggests that disruptive climate change is inevitable even if we begin to stop dumping green house gases. Even worth, climate change collides with current-existing political and economical problems forms a terrible collection of disasters which Parenti called the catastrophic convergence. Growing population, food safety and shortage, water pollution, urbanization and deficiency of lands all contributes to the catastrophic convergence. Parenti argued that such problems don’t just add up nut rather compound and amplify each other, in a way one problem expresses itself through another.
In his book, Parenti suggested that to resolve these problems by mitigation and technological and political adaptation. He argued that by transforming humanity’s relationship with nature and with itself, environmental changes more importantly the catastrophic convergence. Parenti as a sociology provides his solution for these problems. Some scientists are doing the same thing as the technological adaptation---aiming to change the relationship between humanity and nature. Other scientist and futurists, on the other hand look into the universe for the solution.
A non-profit organization Mars One claimed on its website that it will establish a permanent human residence on Mars by 2023. On its website, Mars One provides a specified list of technology that is already available and will be used in the future exploration of the planet. Capsule-like commendations are the main home for volunteers on Mars One. However, some futurist and architects are not satisfied by just living on Mars, they aimed to change the environment on Mars to make it a second earth.
Nomad: Terraforming Mars not only provide permanent residence for human but also proposed a scheme to change the atmospheric and soil chemistry of Mars to make it hospitable for human colonization. According to the designers, “the concept is to build nomad factories that use Martian minerals to create complex carbon green houses gases (GHG) in the atmosphere.” The project has two phases: the blue mars and the green mars. The Nomad project is aimed to complete the Blue phase of the two which is warm the planet, and introduce ocean and forests in Mars. The designers believe that population and climate are two major problems on earth today(they pointed out...
