The Forestry Commission is the Government Department responsible for forestry policy throughout Great Britain. It has a Board of Commissioners with duties and powers prescribed by statute, consisting of a Chairman and up to ten other Forestry Commissioners, including its Director General, who are appointed by the Queen on the recommendation of Ministers.Forestry is a devolved matter. The Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has responsibility for forestry in England as well as certain activities such as international affairs and plant health which remain reserved by Westminster. There are many thousands of small farm woodlands, but little ownership with more than 100 hectares (250 acres) of woodland.Management of woodlands for sporting activities and amenity is an important objective on many woodland estates and on farms. Timber production is typically important on the larger estates.An increasing number of woodlands are managed for conservation and recreation by charitable trusts and private owners.In 1998 the Government published a Forestry Strategy for England. The strategy 'A New Focus for England's Woodlands' sets out the Government's strategic priorities and programmers for forestry in England. The strategy is founded on four guiding principles of quality, integration, partnership and public support.The tree cycle consists of: Before planting a forest a forester usually get together with a landscape design forester to decide the reasons for planting the trees.Forests are generally designed with multiuse objectives such as timber, recreation use and support wildlife.Different trees prefer different soil, shelter, have different timber products. Tree seeds are collected in the autumn. Different trees will produce heavy seeds years such as the oak, which produces seed every four years.Once collected the tree seeds are stratifiedThe trees seeds are planted in the nursery protected from frost, mice or birds.Generally the trees stay in the nursery for 3 years. Before planting can occur the forest needs to design the woodland.Before the trees can be planted the ground has to be prepared to help the trees grow.Mounds of soil are created using a digger, ploughed or the ground could be scarified.Sometimes a deer and or rabbit fence is make sure the trees do not get eaten by these animals Tree planting occurs from November to April. An experienced tree planter can plant up to 1200 conifer trees a day Most conifers are thinned when they are about 25 - 30 years old. This depends on the growing conditionsThinning creates more space between the remaining trees so that they grow thicker and strongerThinning are used for making paper plup or boardsThe forest is thinned again about every 5 - 7 years
