Suicide is a permanent solution to a problem that is most likely just temporary. The word suicide catches the attention of many readers and listeners, but the actions that lead up to suicide are even more important. Noticing these actions can be the difference between life and death, but they still go unnoticed. For teenagers, suicide is the easy way out and suicide remains as one of the leading causes of death. In order to notice a suicidal teen, you need to know the statistics, the teenagers with a higher suicidal risk, and the warning signs of a suicidal teenager.

Teenagers with mental health problems face a higher risk of having suicidal thoughts, and mental illness can range from anxiety to bipolar disorder. Teens going through major life changes such as parents’ divorce and bullying victims also have higher risks of suicide and suicidal thoughts. There is also an enormous amount of factors that affect a teen’s risk of suicide and they include: physiological disorders, feelings about life, family history, abuse, support network, and sexual orientation. Each of these can become an internal or external conflict for a teenager and lead them to suicidal thoughts and actions. Just listening and paying attention to a teenager can help lessen their chance of being a suicidal teen.
Along with there being higher risk teens, there are warning signs for suicidal teenagers. These warning signs can help get a suicidal teenager noticed by the people around him or her. There is always a reason for suicide. In fact, “suicide among teens often occurs following a stressful life event, such as problems at school, a breakup with a boyfriend or girlfriend, the death of a loved one, divorce, or a major family conflict” (New). A teen thinking about suicide might speak about suicide or death and appear not to be joking.
