Imagine a world where everything got turned in on or before the deadline, every time. It is a hard thing to comprehend, is it not? Our modern society is at one of the lowest points it has ever been with a little thing we call procrastination. People of all ages are finding it harder and harder to get their work done in a timely manner. After researching procrastination as a whole, I found a USA Today writer that cited a college professor who said, “in 1978 only 5% of Americans thought of themselves as chronic procrastinators, today the figure is a whopping 26%.“ (Borenstein) The whole notion that one fourth of the people studied diagnosed themselves as habitual procrastinators is shocking. Imagine what those numbers represent today! But how can we fix this growing problem? The best solution I can think of involves figuring out the mental, physical, and relational needs to be addressed in combating this pervasive issue.

Starting off, solving the problem of procrastination is not an easy task to take on directly. There can be many different factors that cause a person to put off doing exactly what needs to be done. One major hurdle is to recognize the major mental habits that people use as walls for putting off work. It has become more common to hear someone throw out a simple excuse to get around doing what is required of them. If you find that this is something that affects the way you prepare (or not) for something, the best exercise is to be proactive and build up a mental fortitude toward any excuses that come to mind. Others ways of helping with mental procrastination is by understanding the sheer fact that you are not perfect and make mistakes. Simply by owning up to your former state of mind and becoming responsible for making future decisions is also a huge step. Whenever you are trying to achieve a large task, and you feel yourself drifting away from it, simply think about it in smaller chunks and spread out the work to give yourself more wiggle room. I know that for me one of the biggest resources for putting my mind in the right place to get things done is through removing all nearby distractions so that there is nothing else to focus on. Thinking about these mental bumps will help you tackle them head on, and perhaps ease your path ahead.

There are many tangible tools that help conquer the physical realm of getting things done in a timely way. Just do an app search for a calendar, planner or to-do list, and be ready to begin structuring your time more efficiently. Having these types of tools can make a great difference in your time management and keep you more accountable to your schedule goals. Technology like this, giving the ability to set multiple alarms or notices, may be one of the strongest factors that will allow more awareness of exactly what is to come. Is your environment comfy...
