Xu, staples and Shen define nonverbal communication as “facial expression and body language” and further mentions that communication is a reciprocal process between 2 or more people relaying understanding, ensuring the output is acknowledges and correctly conveyed. Video three’s interview indicates poor non verbal communication between 4:36 and 4:54. Therefore, it is important that trust, confidence and respect are established to enable a open and mutual value for one another. To create this bond, and to communicate effectively, nurses need to "empty oneself of ones own prejudices, patterns of responding and frame of reference" (Shipley 2010) to enable a safe environment for patients to communicate. In Video three, poor verbal communication was displayed between 4:12-4:28 when the nurse questions the patients’ response to her weight. This reaction from the nurse is an appalling use of Advising and Evaluating. Discussing weight is a sensitive topic for some woman and can escalate into an uncomfortable discussion when credibility is questioned. The nurses’ response was “really? ” followed by a facial expression associated with disbelief immediately after the patient’s response. A Nurse went on to make assumptions based on her on weight to prompt a different response. The patient becomes defensive, appearing vulnerable, her pitch increasing signaling unease evoking an unsafe and untrusting environment. The patient’s response continued to unfold noting how she knew her current weight. Regardless of the accuracy, this nurses’ response was clearly threatening, as adequate rapport had not been established to challenge the patient in this manner (Stein- Parbury 2014). This communication could perhaps has been better handled by probing in a non personal, manner such as “ when did you last weight yourself and what were the circumstances?” Such open questions are not likely to be conveyed as questioning the credibility of previous responses, rather adding broader information in a non-threating fashion. Furthermore, nurses should suppress personal emotions, expressions and prejudice in order to communicate efficiently irrespective of their personal thoughts. A nurse who listens without judgment will conveys respect resulting in a trusting interface.

Questioning
Effective questioning is one of the most important techniques in creating a concise and cohesive interview. In Interview part three, the nurse examples poor questioning skills becoming the thunder stealer, jumping in with personal feelings and opinions before giving them a patient adequate time to respond. The nurse dominates the period between 3:26 and 3:48 voicing her personal complications with smoking. The reverse roll of the patient showing empathy for the nurses’ experience is overshadowing the patients’ response. The patient explains “you’ll feel a lot better later on ” indicating she has experienced this process of quitting smoking. Empathy is crucial to understanding the perceptions of another person's experience and listening to the patients thoughts is important. However, this approach could have been improved by the nurse observing the patients verbal and non verbal cues, rephrasing the question to obtain the patients personal experience with smoking, taking back control of the interview.
