As the largest repository for primary and secondary source material on the history of nursing in the world, the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing is uniquely situated to create research and scholarship that will position nursing history as central to debates about health policy and practice. This type of group project fits within the larger objective of the course, which is to teach students to identify and analyze events and ideas influential to nursing and health care through the framework of gender, and its interconnectedness to themes of class and race. The course, which is normally taught by Penn Nursing Associate Professor and Center Associate Director Dr. Barbra Mann Wall, who is currently on sabbatical, examines changing ideas about the nature of health and illness; changing forms of health care delivery; changing experiences of women as providers and patients; changing role expectations and realities for nurses; changing midwifery practice; and changing segmentation of the health care labor market.
The N518 course also provides comparative analysis from a global perspective, allowing students to expand their frame of reference on nursing history beyond the US. Dr. Wall’s commitment to fostering healthy debate and thought-provoking discussion in the classroom was noted when she was awarded the University of Pennsylvania Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for distinguished teaching in 2013. Dr. Wall was also appointed as the Evan C. Thompson Endowed Chair of Excellence in Teaching in 2011. In her announcement of the appointment, Penn Nursing Margaret Bond Dean Afaf Meleis noted Dr. Wall’s leadership and work in shaping the school’s undergraduate curriculum.
Another Center faculty member, Associate Professor Dr. Cindy Connolly, has played a key role in shaping Penn Nursing’s undergraduate curriculum as the current chair of the committee. Dr. Connolly has shown unparalleled commitment to highlighting pediatric nursing history in the classroom. In 2004 she was the PI on an innovative curriculum project through the National Library of Medicine which highlighted how to use primary sources and visual technology to teach nursing history. In 2012, Dr. Connolly also received the Dean’s Award for Exemplary Teaching. In announcing the award, Dean Meleis noted that Dr. Connolly was able to challenge her students with a strong theoretical base, while also conveying knowledge through “lived experiences.” For instance, in her course N324, Children’s Health in the United States, 1800-2000, Dr. Connolly explores the impact of historical ideas, events, and actions on the history of children’s health care in the United States through practical questioning of the distinctions between children’s vs. adult-based health care. . Emphasis is placed on tracing the origins and evolution of issues that have salience for 21st century health care policy and the delivery of health care. The course speaks to one of the central missions of the Bates Center, which is to use nursing history as a tool to engage and influence health care and social policy from domestic and international perspectives.
