Observation of a Video Segment
I chose to focus on the corporate meeting for this week’s discussion. The questions chosen to focus my observation concerned participant roles: “Are meeting participants playing/fulfilling distinct roles throughout the meeting?” Since no guideline and/or information were available concerning the content or purpose of the meeting, I decided to concentrate on the participants rather than other aspects.

However, after the female in the grey suit mentions, “I was surprised as we progressed folks shared more candid feedback…,” the dynamics of the interaction change. Not only do the other members become more engaged in the discussion, but also a shift in levels of authority and roles appears to have occurred. Indeed, the leader-follower or authority figure-subordinate dynamic appears to become more equalized. An open exchange occurs that reveals not only positive aspects, but also negative ones. It even causes the facilitator to justify and/or defend his position concerning the occurrence shared by the woman on the right of the table.
During the second half of the video, role and power dynamics appear to return as the leader is addressed in a more formal manner concerning corporate values, culture, and vision. An exchange takes place that suggests that the people attending the meeting have worked together for some time. They reflect on their culture and value building efforts and the decisions made concerning the same.
