Child Development Observation
Children begin to develop from birth and the first five years of child’s life are important. Likewise, children achieve different abilities by a certain age, which is called developmental milestones. The area of developmental milestones are physical, cognitive, language, and social and emotional. It is essential for teachers to understand how infants and toddlers develop over time. Therefore, teachers should observe their children to assess their developmental levels. Through observation, teachers can discover children’s interest and personalities and prepare lesson plans for children. As I entered the room, I noticed the colorful wall decoration and kid-sized tables; the floor was covered with play mat. For the decoration, there was rainbows and clouds that had children’s picture on it. On the right side of the classroom, there was cabinets for children’s school supplies, books, and blocks. The left side of the room was the where children’s table was located. It was yellow and children’s name was written on it. However, I observed that there was no desks for a teacher. The playground was small but it was equipped with different activities that children can do. There was slides, swings, and sand boxes; the surface was covered with shredded wood fiber.
As I started to observe Josie and Ah-rin, it was their third period. The third period was basically study time where students do reading, writing, and vocabulary activities. However, a teacher gave Josie and Ah-rin different materials to do. Ms. Song asked her to draw anything on her notebook and she drew some shapes for Josie. At the same time, Ah-rin was given with the workbook assignments; she was doing a word worksheet where she had to match the words to the pictures. Even though Ah-rin was allow to talk with her classmates, she barely talked. Then, Ah-rin approached Ms. Song for help. Ms. Song read words and phrases from the worksheet for Ah-rin and she repeated after her as she was connecting the words and pictures. After reading and writing, Ms. Song gave Ah-rin short vocabulary quiz. Ms. Song read aloud words and phrases to Ah-rin, and Ah-rin wrote them down. While Ah-rin was doing her workbook and quiz, Josie drew lines and shapes and even wrote her name in English on her notebook. Then, she walked around the classroom and consistently asked to go to the restroom; Ms. Song offered her to do a puzzle. Josie sat down and started to assemble the puzzle pieces.
Children had playtime during fourth period; they went out to the playground. Before walking to the playground, Ms. Song asked children to put their shoes on and form a straight line. Ah-rin followed Ms. Song’s direction, but Josie didn’t. Josie was walking barefoot on the hallway. Ms. Song told Josie she would take her playtime if she doesn’t follow her direction. Josie put her on shoes right away and the class went out to the playground. As Josie and Ah-rin got to the playground, they both started to run around. Even though there were variety of activities that children can do, they were crowded front of the swing; Ms. Song told them to form a line and wait for their turn. When Josie saw the line, she moved on to ride the slide; Ah-rin was still in the line. During play time, Ah-rin mainly played with sandbox with her classmates and Josie was playing with different playground equipment and showed dance moves front of Ms. Song.
