Winston Churchill once said, “Continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential.” Effort and pure determination is a key part of the success of the rocket boys throughout Homer Hickam’s October Sky. Due to the effort and determination that Sonny had to use in order to pursue his dreams throughout the memoir of October Sky, the theme in this book can be used to help any 21st century student in achieving their dreams.

This shows that if you set goals for yourself, and if you work hard enough at them, that you can achieve almost anything. For high school students in the 21st century, it is essential to have goals for yourself, especially since the kids in high school are our society’s future and they will be future leaders. In whatever you do, this book proves again that effort is essential.
Eventually, hard work always pays off in some way. For Sonny and the rocket boys, it proved to pay off huge for them. They got the ultimate prize of the national science fair. It was what the boys had been striving to do achieve, it was what they worked for. There were also other reasons that they worked for, and one of them was Ms. Riley. Sometimes for people to put so much effort into something, to devote so much of their time to something, there is an inspiration. Ms. Riley was a huge inspiration for the boys, even more so for Sonny. Even if you do not have an inspiration, sometimes it is worth it to take the time to find one because it gives you passion, as it did for Sonny in October Sky .The success of the rocket boys was due to the inspiration of Miss Riley, along with all of the effort that the boys put into their rockets.
