The Oil and Gas industry is one of the richest industries in the world and over the years they have developed rules and regulation because of the dangers involved in this industry.
Three main injuries occur on oil rigs, loss of hearing, over a period of time the loud noise can harm the hearing even when the workers wear ear protection. Second is body injury ,the oil field is demanding and the workers have to work diligently for long period this can lead exhaustion and injury of muscles. Third are explosions, oil is highly combustible and when drilling the risk doubles. To name a few incidents, in 1988 Piper Alpha exploded and killed 168 workers because of poor ...view middle of the document...
I do not believe the spill occurred because of employee safety issues at on the rig ,but maybe in the development of the rig safety protocols may have been avoided. There was a well integrity failure, with a loss of hydrostatic control of the well. It was followed by an inability to control the flow from the well with the blowout preventer equipment. It allowed the hydrocarbons to release and the blowout emergency functions that failed to seal the well after the first explosion. Could this explosion and oil spill been prevented? Yes, if the safety measures was followed during the production of the Deepwater Horizon. My conclusion is that the explosion and spill occurred because of equipment failure.
Pollution and Businesses
Becuase of the combustible and harmful chemicals in oil and gas the Environmential Protection Agency (EPA) has establish rules, regulations and prevention programs. Such as the Oil Pollution Act, this act is place after the Exxon Valdez incident . Although preventive actions are in place it cannot prevent the incident from occurring ,but it can reduce the impact to the environment.
The BP spill damaged over 16,000 miles of coastline covering Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Similar to the Exxon Valdez disaster the BP spill harmed the ecosystem. The polluted waters lead to contaminate sea life which resulted in no tourism, commercial fishing and closed restaurants. Some locations had edible seafood but the public feared contamination, so those businesses lost money.
Since BP worked under the direction of the federal government the public was angry at both organizations because of their slow actions. BP should have appointed a Public Relations person that can show empathy towards employees, business owners and the environment. BP has won its spot, in the Public Relations Hall of Fame for "What not the do in crisis communication". Tony Hayward was the CEO of BP and spoke to the media about the tragic oil spill. Below are BP communication mishaps that should not be done.
1.No written statement was prepared. Hayward spoke to the media without accurate information. For instance, he stated the spill leaked 5,000 barrels a day ,but after research 10,000 barrels were leaked. If Hayward was unsure of the barrels he should have state " I am unsure at this time" . If the data was presented to him from an unknown source he should not state it at all.
2. Show consideration. I am sure Hayward experienced stress during the disaster but stating, "I want my...
