Bookreport: Catcher in the Rye 1. the author Jerome D. Salinger was born on the 1 january 1919 in New York City.He published 4 books but his debut story turned into a classic.Catcher in the Rye. After attending school in NYC and a millitary academy J.D Salinger went to the Columbia University without graduation.J.D Salinger became a writer after joining Worldwar II Catcher in the Rye was published in 1951. He was divorced in 1967, and has 2 grown up children.2. the book.Even though Catcher in the Rye was published in 1951 it's an ageless story which is still understood by todays youth. The central theme of the narration is something we all can relate to: the methamorphosis of the being.The protagonist Holden Caulfield is a typical teenager, he has fears and hopes, problems with his parents, school and girls.The story is told by the protagonist which makes it easy to identify with Holden.Starting with the first lines Holden leads the reader into his world. Instead of giving the reader a detailed explanation of himself Holden refuses to start with that " David Copperfield kind of crap"(page 1, chapter 1).His lousy way of talking( his slang) shows Holden as somebody totally normal.He is very sarcastic and loves to psychoanalyse people, as we can see in his very detailed characterisations he gives about anyone he meets, even a barkeeper is worth half a page just to give a vivid picture of Holdens environment.Holden starts his story with his brother D.B who plays a central role next to his sister Phoebe. These are the only family ties we learn about in the first chapter. Holden attends the Pencey private school a place which "Since 1888 we have been molding boys into splendid, clear-thinking young men". After some rather sarcastic comments about the school and his roommate, Holden, who was dropped out of school ( he passed in 4 subjects) decides to meet his old history teacher before he leaves.He changed school quite often because of the "phonies" who always surround him. The first part of the book ends with this conversation. Now Holden's journey to New York City begins.Holden turns out to be somebody, who gets jealous on a lot of people because he isn't the "Superman" he probably wants to be. He, for example, gets into a fight with his roommate who met a girl. Holden turns crazy in this scene since he isn't dating...
