One Direction is an English-Irish pop boy band from London. The guys in the group are: Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, and Harry Styles. After meeting each other and finishing in third place The X Factor (during the 7th season of the British singing competition) in 2010, the band signed with Syco Records (Simon Cowell’s label). They became an international success with the help of social media like Facebook and Twitter, and their three albums Up All Night, Take Me Home, and Midnight Memories topped the charts of everywhere, and so did their hit singles, such as "What Makes You Beautiful" and "Story Of My Life." He has two younger sisters, Waliyha and Safaa, and one older sister, Doniya. He grew up in East Bowling. He was a student at Lower Fields Primary School and went to Tong High School. Zayn felt like he did not fit in at his first two schools because of his mixed heritage. (Dare to Dream, 33-34). Zayn said when he was auditioning for The X Factor: "I was looking for an experience". He says urban music is his main musical influence now, but when he was growing up, he was really liked R&B and rap. He is also a big fan of Bruno Mars, like the other members of One Direction, and would really like to work with him someday. In June 2012, Zain got some criticism from a blogger who thought he should not be pushing his religion (Islam) on young fans. At the same time, conservative Muslims were criticizing him on Twitter, because they do not think he takes his religion seriously enough.
Liam James Payne was born on August 29, 1993. He is from Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England. His parents are Karen and Geoff Payne, and he has two older sisters. Liam was born three weeks early, and until he was four years old, Liam had to get regular tests done at the hospital because doctors found out one of his kidneys was scarred and did not function the way it should. This condition was very painful so he had to take pain medicine every day when he was younger. As a student, Liam was very involved in sports. Liam says he was bullied in school and started boxing lessons when he was 12 years old. He went to City of Wolverhampton College and was a music technology student. When he was there, Liam once performed in front of a crowd of 26,000 people at a Wolverhampton Wanderersfootball match. He auditioned in 2008 for The X Factor's fifth season when he was just fourteen. He made it to the judges' houses, but Simon Cowell thought he was not quite ready for the competition and told him he should come back in two years. Liam says Justin Timberlake is one of his biggest influences. He also says that he really likes to watch Take That member, Gary Barlow, perform.
Niall James Horan, was born on September 13, 1993. He is from Mullingar, County Westmeath, Ireland, so he is the only Irish member of the band. He has an older brother named Greg. Their parents, Maura Gallagher and Bobby Horan, divorced when he was five. He and his brother went back and forth between their parents’ homes for a few years before they decided to live with their father in Mullingar. Niall went to Coláiste Mhuire, a boys' Christian Brothers school. He was in the school choir, and also performed in different places around Ireland before he got together with the group on The X Factor. Niall has been playing guitar for years. He says he is a "big swing" fan, and likes to listen to his favorite artists like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Michael Bublé. Niall is also a big fan of rock such as The Eagles, Bon Jovi and The Script.
