Opposed to lowering the legal drinking age to 18
I am opposing the issue of making the legal drinking age 18 for these three reasons;
A minimum drinking age of 21 reduces public health problems.
The age limit should stay 21 because of the dangers posed by drinking.
The age limit being 21 has made our roads safer.
Underage drinking is already a problem in our society. Setting the legal age lower would only make it worse. At the age of 18 most of us are still in high school. Our decission making capabilities are still developing and our choices are short term, not long term. Adding alcohol to the mix would be dangerous and a step in the wrong direction.
In the 1970’s reports showed that teenage car accidents increased in states that had a lower age limit than 21. This prompted Congress to pass a National Minimum Drinking Age Act in 1984. This act is a federal law that takes away highway funding for roads to any state that failed to make the minimum age 21. Since this happened and states don’t want funding taken away they have all raised it back to 21, Wyoming and South Dakota were the last to change in 1988. Before 1984 when the ages for drinking were different in some states the roads between those states that had lower than 21 against a state that had 21 as the age limit were called blood borders. When a state had an age of 21 for the drinking age, the state next to them had a younger age of under 21. This would have the all of those under 21 driving to the next state to do their drinking legally and then drive back home drunk to their state that was over 21. The fatalities that would happen on the roads between those states increased significantly. When all states went to 21 there was a major drop in highway crashes between states for the 18-21 group. The percentage of underage drinkers since 1984 has gone down. Studies show that when the drinking age is 21 the younger groups drink less.
During the vietnam era they changed the drinking age to 18 because at 18 you could go to war, why couldn’t you drink? So they changed the age limit to 18 during this time. This change came way after the 1933 law after prohibition ended that you had to be 21. The dangers this posed outweighed the reasoning to keep the age limit lower. One of the reasons the lower drinking age was abandoned was because of...
