Anastasia CarterMrs. FredaEnglish 10 CP8 May 2014Biography of Edgar Allan PoeEdgar Allan Poe was born in Boston in 1809. He was a beloved American short story writer, poet, and critic. Poe's father disappeared by the age of 3. However, his dearest mother died shortly after moving her and her family to Richmond. John Allan was Poe's illegitimate foster father due to the fact that John hadn't legally adopted Edgar. Poe accompanied the Allans to England and was educated there from 1815 to 1820. Poe later wrote about this time period in "William Wilson" Tensions developed between the two, and by 1826, Poe received little support from Allan. Around this time, Poe anonymously published his first book of poetry and later went on to enlist in the army. Edgar's early poetry was derivative, taking from romantic conventions that held a symbolic heft. Poe was said to have scorned didactic poetry that expressed conventional sentiments. In the mid-1830s, Poe began establishing his reputation as a short-story write, which in turn led to an editorial position at Southern Literary Messenger. Edgar also greatly favored American writers such as Nathaniel Hawthorne. Edgar Allan Poe often rejected realism in favor of highly subjective, metaphysical fantasies. Poe's longest piece of fiction was "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym." By the late 1830s and early 1840s Poe was the most celebrated short story writer. His subject was often described as brooding human consciousness of death and wanting to be immortal. He was thrilled in exploring characters in many states of extremity. Poe's amazing work challenged the optimism of popular American literature, as well as confronting the human impulse to repeat self-destructive acts during this period. "The Philosophy of Composition" emphasizes the importance of form over content. Poe was also known as an innovator in literary form and an originator of detective fiction. Poe's poem, "The Raven," gave him tremendous and popular success. He demonstrated his dedication to the form as series of repetitions of single idea: inescapability. Edgar Allan Poe's frail health was because of his weakness for alcohol. In turn, alcohol made Poe's last few years miserable and was described as being in a delirious state before dying as he wondered the streets of Baltimore. Poe reflects on his depression and loss of loved ones as in his poem, "The Raven" (Barney).Summary of "The Raven"In Poe's poem, "The Raven," the speaker writes about the relentless taping at the window by a raven. The plot is set when the raven begins the uneasy repetition of a single phrase "nevermore!" There are plenty of literary elements in this piece. To begin, the rhyme scheme is ABCBB, ABCBB. Repetition is evident as the raven shrieks "nevermore." Some rhymes include; napping, rapping; morrow, sorrow; beating entreating and so on. Imagery comes into play when the speaker descries the setting in the beginning three stanzas. Edgar Allan Poe is mourning the loss of his...
