Consistently, consumers are faced with the choice to spend more money and eat organically. One might begin to wonder after consistently hirer grocery bills, if the extra expenditure is worth the added health benefits, environmental conservation, or reduced pesticide residue. Current studies, specially stated in the later of this paper, convey that most consumers are indeed wasting their money. Importantly, there is a lack of abundance organic farming research. Long term side effects of added hormones in corn or meat and pesticides residue on produce are unknown; because of this could come to be detrimental to human health with the coming years. The following paper will address the positives and negatives to organic farming relating to health benefits and greenhouse gas emissions that together convey the current insignificance of organic or inorganic consumption based on current research, unless a pregnant women or child around the age of two.
Consumers’ selection of organic foods can be partially attributed to promise health benefits, and in the case of women and young children, some health benefits have been found. Only one study regarding women, by the American College of Physicians, asserts that if organic meat and dairy was consumed during pregnancy beneficial fatty acids, conjugated linoleic and transvaccenic acid, yield higher presence in breast milk (Smith-Spangler 352). Mothers who are breast feeding can then positively influence their children’s nutritional status. Organic dairy products have also led people to believe health benefits for young children “who consumed dairy products of which more than 90% were organically produced had a lower risk of eczema at age 2 years than children who consumed dairy products of which less than 50% where organically produced (Smith-Spangler, 350).” Pregnant women should learn their nutrition profile and that of their milk, in order to know if they are deficient in conjugated linoleic or transvaccenic acid, and then these women would be able to make a health decision based on personal genetics. Eczema correlation should be taken into consideration because the test marginal appears large enough to take notice, but the study of breast milk has only been supported by a single study. Without further research, pregnant mothers may be weary of spending the extra money.
Health benefits can be induced from eating organic chicken and pork due to lessened ability of human antibiotics to functionally properly after consuming inorganic chicken and pork (Smith-Spangler, 358). Inorganic pork and chicken “have a higher risk for contamination with bacteria resistant to 3 or more antibiotics than were organic alternatives (Smith-Spangler, 358).” People cannot rule over the earth, the earth is unimaginably more powerful than human beings.
