Organizational behavior is a vital ingredient in the work force.Ask a manager of 35, 25 or even 15 years ago what their Organization's Behavioral patterns were or how their employees felt about certain issues and you would probably get nothing back but blank stares. Organizational Behavior was not a part of the business world in those days. The idea that a manager need only deal with the technical skills of it's employees while disregarding their own listening skills, communication skills and interaction skills was the common practice.What worked in the past is not necessarily going to work today. As the world changes so does our environment. We need to change with it or we will be left behind. Organizational Behavior is one of those tools being used for change. The past 10-15 years has shown an increase in Organizational Behavior studies. Organizational Behavior has become an important tool for businesses striving to meet the needs of its employees while understanding the impact of the individual on an organization's behavior.A recent study on employee burnout by Northwestern National Life Insurance shows that at least one out of every four employees views their job as the biggest stressor in their lives (Work, stress and health conference, 1999).What do workers want? What are their concerns? The answers are not always the same and the methods of discovery are varied as well but some key responses that seem to be constantly mentioned are job security, a balanced work and family life, and a competitive salary.At my employer, Gilbarco/Veeder Root, the upper management was so aware of the issues in this area they decided to hold a company wide survey and then later address the concerns and needs brought up by the survey. They appointed a committee that addressed the concerns with ideas and then a process of how the management could implement the new policies into place. This worked fairly well the following year when the survey was held again the results were far better.CultureThe purpose and function of culture in the workplace is to help create and maintain integration, bring employees from all levels of the organization closer together, and to enhance performance and productivityBasically, organizational culture is the personality of the organization, similar to what you can use to get a feeling about someone's personality.At the company in which I work for, Gilbarco/Veeder Root, we are a mix of culturally divers employee's.
