INTRODUCTION TO THE TOPIC
Organization citizenship behavior has been emerging as an interesting topic for any organization these days. Katz and Kahn (1996) were the first people to identify this kind of autonomous behavior in workplace. The term Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB’s) was first coined by Dennis Organ and his colleagues (Cf. Bateman & Organ, 1983; Smith Organ, & Near, 1983). Although such behavior is neither compelled nor demanded by an organization, the organization is found to be highly benefited from this type of behavior possessed by the employees. It has a positive impact on smooth functioning of the organization.
REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE
The various positive implication Organizational citizenship behavior may have on organization and its effect on other Organizational performance determinants have made it a topic of interest for various researchers. Katz (1964) and Kahn (1966) observed the employees constructive and cooperative behavior that goes beyond call of duty are essential elements in smooth functioning of an organization.
DIMENSION OF ORGANIZATIONAL CITIZENSHIP BEHAVIOR
The dimensions of organizational citizenship behavior are classified into five constituents. These five dimensions are grouped as Individual directed behavior or organizational directed behavior. The Individual directed behavior includes altruism and courtesy whereas organizational directed behavior includes conscientiousness, Civic Virtue and Sportsmanship. The behavior of that individual that is directed towards other individual in an organization is known as Organizational citizenship behavior individuals (OCBI). Similarly, the organizational behavior directed by employees to their organization is known as organizational citizenship behavior organization (OCBO).
Altruism is defined as the tendency of helping other individuals in job related task in an organization. It is the important dimension of organizational citizenship behavior as it automatically leads to healthy and cooperative working environment. The individuals are not bounded by the organization to help others but rather they are morally and ethically bounded to help other individuals.
Being courteous is very much important in an organization. It includes thoughtfulness in employees and considerate behavior that uplifts the organizational working environment. It helps to resolve conflict between employees and managers and also promote peaceful working environment. The peaceful work environment is only possible when the employees show courtesy and respect each other.
Conscientiousness is one of the important personality traits that motivate the individual to much more than the minimum requirement. It involves the trait of doing things well and in more organized manner. Conscientious individuals are more organized, sincere, systematic, disciplined and keen to achieve organizational goals.
