WorthSYS 540June 15, 2004Organizational ImprovementIn today's business world, many organizations are constantly trying to improve processes to help the organization operate more efficiently. The Dallas Independent School District has implemented several programs that were designed to help accomplish organizational goals. In this paper the writer will propose a detailed project for performance improvement that utilizes a "systems thinking" approach. As characterized by Daniel Aronson, "The approach of systems thinking is fundamentally different from that of traditional forms of analysis. Traditional analysis focuses on separating the individual pieces of what is being studied...Systems thinking, in contrast, focuses on how the thing being studied interacts with the other constituents of the system-a set of elements that interact to produce behavior-of which it is a part" (UOP, 2004).The Dallas Independent School District's mission is to, "Prepare all students to graduate with the knowledge and skills to become productive and responsible citizens" (DISD, 2004). The Dallas Independent School District's goals are to ensure that by the collaboration of administrators, teachers, and staff within the district, students will gain necessary skills and a quality education. In order for Dallas school administrators, teachers, and staff to adhere to the mission and goals of the organization teamwork and effective communication will be the key to success. The performance improvement project that is proposed for the Dallas Independent School District to utilize a systems thinking approach is called Campus Instructional Leadership Team (CILT). The Campus Instructional Leadership Team is a group of individuals on every campus that is considered "specialist" of the area in which they will serve. These individuals are comprised of administrators such as the principal and the assistant principal, and teachers in all content areas such as Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Special Education, and Bilingual Education. The Campus Instructional Leadership Team framework will provide many benefits for all stakeholders in the Dallas Independent School District. This system of training and communication helps to align district and campus objectives, to ensure that strategies are coordinated with needs, to review and understand data in a user-friendly format, to strive toward continuous improvement in all areas, and to build capacity among all stakeholders. The ultimate goal is increased student achievement for all students in the Dallas Independent School District.
