Holden Caulfield's ExaminationPatient is suffering from Post Dramatic Stress DisorderTherapist: Juliet ZeinFinal Analysis: January 24th, 2014Teacher: Mr. WallaceTITLE OF CASE: TheraPTSDTheraPTSDMental illness in any form causes a person to feel as if they are drowning in a sea of endless troubles and depression. Based on the evidence, the patient Holden Caulfield is suffering from PTSD. This mental disease is strongly related with hyper-anxiety that is caused by exposure to intense trauma. The death of his brother Allie and his viewing of a suicide have contributed to him developing Post Dramatic Stress Disorder. Holden exhibits the 3 categories of PTSD symptoms; reliving the past, detachment and agitation. Additionally he has experienced episodes of insomnia and sleep deprivation.Regarding the first category of PTSD symptom, the patient does exhibit various instances where he is reliving the past. During our sessions, Holden often spoke of the suicide of his acquaintance James Castle. Most people would try to block out such a disturbing event; however, Holden relives it in detail, remembering it with clarity. "He was dead, and his teeth, and blood were all over the place and nobody would even go near him. He had on this turtle neck sweater I'd lent him" (Salinger 170). There are many more examples of evidence showing how clearly this event remains in Holden's mind. It is not a memory as much as an episode that he seems to relive often in clear detail. Additionally, his relationship with Jane Gallagher exhibits another example of Holden clinging on to the past. " I still couldn't get her off my brain. I knew her like a book. I really did. I mean besides checkers, she was quite fond of all athletic sports, and after I got to know her, the whole summer long we played tennis together [every] morning" (Salinger 76). Jane was one girl that never escaped Holden's mind. After Stradlater went out with Jane, Holden seemed to miss her. As a result, very fond memories of Jane appeared. Holden felt comfortable around Jane. Examples of this are when Holden remembers that Jane was the only person that he showed Allie's baseball glove too. Holden knew everything about her; from what she liked, to what they used to have fun doing together. Finally the memories of his brother Allie are ones that Holden cannot escape from. In fact, Allie is like a support system for Holden. Allie is a hero figure to his brother, and Holden clings to the deep love he had for his brother as a means to get through everyday life. For instance, when Stradlater gave him a composition to do about describing a room, Holden did not follow his instructions and instead decided to do it on Allie's baseball mitt. Holden knew the slightest details about the mitt "[m]y brother Allie had this left-handed fielder's mitt. He was left-handed. The thing that was descriptive about it, though, was that he had poems written all over the fingers and the pocket and everywhere. In green ink. He wrote them...
