The play, Othello, by William Shakespeare, is a tragedy with many elements. The main characters of the play are Othello and Iago. Othello is a Moorish general in the Venetian army, and Iago is his ensign. Iago expected to be appointed as Othello's lieutenant; however, Othello appointed another man, Cassio. Cassio had no military experience and had only learned about the military through books. Because of this, Iago hates Othello and plots against him. Due to Iago's villainous plan, Othello's wife, Desdemona, is killed by Othello. Based on evidence Iago gave him, Othello believes she has been unfaithful. Iago also stabbed both his wife, Emilia, and his pawn named Roderigo. The play is an in depth tale of love and deception.Shakespeare has a very unique style, and he is without a doubt one of the most highly esteemed writers of all time. This play is a true tragedy, which Shakespeare masterfully created. Shakespeare's tragedies are true tragedies in which most of the characters die by unfortunate means. Shakespeare uses a very complex writing style. He uses many literary techniques. There are many soliloquies in the play to help the audience understand a character's motivation and thoughts. Both Iago and Othello have very important soliloquies that reveal detailed information. That is why the audience knows so much about Iago's plot. The information that the reader knows, that the characters do not, is called dramatic irony. Shakespeare also employs another type of irony, which is verbal irony. A perfect example is when Iago tricks Cassio into joining a plan that will harm him. Iago tells him "I protest, in the sincerity of love and honest kindness." This is an exact contradictory of what he is actually doing. Iago is lying and only wants to harm Cassio. This is an example of saying one thing and meaning the exact opposite.Shakespeare uses other techniques as well. He also uses imagery extensively. Imagery is often used when characters make reference to Othello's Moorish background. Foreshadowing is another major element. It often appears in Iago's soliloquies. He provides hints that enable the reader to hypothesize about future events. Another element of Shakespeare's writing that makes it so enjoyable is the rhythm of the play. The lines of the play have a unique rhythm that identifies Othello as a work of Shakespeare. Adding to the uniqueness of his writing style is his wide variety of word choice. Shakespeare's extensive vocabulary is very evident in the play, Othello. Shakespeare also uses very few stage directions. Almost all of the information the reader obtains comes from the dialogue between the characters. Shakespeare is an outstanding writer who has a unique and interesting style.I found the story very interesting. I felt that it was very suspenseful due to constant new developments throughout the story. Near the beginning of the story, after Othello has gone to court and most of the characters have been introduced, Iago states to the...
