a. The employee selection methods at Outback Steakhouse help the organization achieve a competitive advantage by discovering and hiring employees who fit their needs and strategic plans. Implementing a challenging selection process allowed Outback to select the most qualified candidates who will adhere at all times to the vision and beliefs of what the restaurant stands for. Outback Steakhouse utilizes psychological and aptitude tests along with an interview to select their employees. These tests provide Outback with a preview of that candidate’s personality and behavior. Most often candidates will apply for a position with a restaurant only because of its popularity and they are not concerned of the values and what the company really stands for as a whole.
b. Choosing the right employees can improve the efficiency of other human resource practices and avoid various problems. Outback grasp the concept that selecting the right employee is critical as it plays a direct role in improving the efficiency and avoid problems. Their belief is if they can reduce or eliminate time spent on personal matters, it could then spend more time focusing on the customers. Outback realize that there is too much competition for Outback Steakhouse or any business to risk having mediocre employees. Selecting the right person for the right job can mean success or failure for a company. They realize that a restaurant possibly located next door to Outback can very well hire a candidate on the spot but in turn; they do not offer other incentives available for their employees to take advantage of. This is a primary factor related to a high turnover rates. Outback’s strategy is more solid because they not only are selective in who they hire but once you are hired, you have many benefits that are offered and this is the mainstay for high retention
