The world is developing; positively and negatively. Some people don’t even realize that the world is having trouble producing food. Currently, it’s not as evident as it will be in the future. Most of society has trouble accepting the fact that there is a solution to the trouble of food production. The key is to produce GMO’s which stands for genetically modified organisms. The world needs to overcome its fear of genetically modified food, as it will be hugely significant in the future. Genetically modified foods are often mistaken as fake food that is grown in test tubes or injected with chemicals. One very small modification in food can allow for big change such as genes being added for blight resistance, drought resistance, heat resistance and pollution resistance. Although the genes will help the food endure problems caused by the world’s changes, it cannot make them completely immune to these problems. Examples of common GMO’s found in stores today include tomatoes, rice, potatoes, corn, milk, and canola oil. To many people in the world today, genetic modified foods may seem to be insignificant, but will most likely encounter them in one point in their lives if they haven’t already.
Society is growing rapidly every second of every day. The world’s current population is seven billion and it is guaranteed that it will continue to grow quickly. If it is currently at seven billion, imagine the amount in 2050. The expected population in 2050 is nine billion people. To many, it must seem like an amazing accomplishment to have nine billion people on the planet. But what people don’t understand is that with such a large number of mouths to feed, it will be difficult to grow enough food because of the population. It has already been proven to be a challenge to feed seven billion. How will it be possible to feed another two billion? One of the only solutions is to produce genetically modified food. Genetically modified food will allow for more food to be grown quickly and in large amounts. It is feared by many scientists that the population’s appetites are growing; especially in wealthier nations where it is expected to increase dramatically between 70 and 100 percent by mid-century. As the MIT Technology Review magazine article written by David Rotman says, “Biotech crops will have an essential role in ensuring that there’s enough to eat.” Every person on planet earth has to eat to survive meaning that food needs to be produced. But with a rapidly growing population of people on the planet as well as global warming it will become extremely challenging to grow enough food for every human soul. That is why GMO’s must be thought of in a positive manner because of the impact it will have on the human race in the future.
Currently, scientists are particularly worried about global warming because of the issues that arise because of it. As the planet continues to heat up a lot of valuable food is lost. Heat is a big problem with a lot of plants because they are heat sensitive. Wheat for example, is very sensitive to heat and is eaten by most of the world’s population.
