Overview of the Role Theory of Management
The Role Theory of management is based on individuals within the organization adapting to the formal and informal roles that come with their position. According to CSU-global Module 3 (2013), “Roles shape the way we see ourselves and help to define the behaviors we exhibit and don’t exhibit within organizations” (p.5). These roles are defined by the position held by the individual and how they interrelate to other individuals and their role in the organization. The formal role definitions specify the duties and responsibilities. The informal role definitions form expectations for behavior in that role. Defining the expectations for performance in each role within the organization and it’s interdependence on other individuals roles is a key to success. Developing the knowledge, skills and abilities of each individual to fill those roles contributes to individual and organizational success.
It is important to have congruent understanding of the roles by all members of an organization. This is the basis of understanding that is necessary to be efficient and effective. According to Lorette (2013), “role conflict can occur within an organization when employees have a different set of expectations on the role of the leaders than what those leaders accept as their role. Role conflict can occur when a leader feels they should be performing a certain role but employees expect the leaders to fill a different role”. Leadership of the organization must be continually sensitive to this potential for conflict and manage and adjust expectations accordingly.
