P!NK - "DEAR MR. PRESIDENT"Pink (Alecia Moore). "Dear Mr. President". This song is about the discontent that she, and a portion of the American public felt concerning the way the President was handling certain situations and asking questions that she felt deserved honest answers. She wrote the song on Martin Luther King Day in 2005 and recorded it with the Indigo Girls. Pink said "This [song] is an open letter to the President of the United States", George W. Bush, and "This is one of the most important songs I have written." (YouTube Interview)"Dear Mr. President, Come take a walk with me. Let's pretend we're just two people and You're not better than me. I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly."She is speaking directly to the President, who because of his position, would never take the time to go one on one with an artist or anyone else to just have a conversation and answer questions from that individual honestly. She is trying to even out their social standings andHudnall 2saying she will be honest with him if he will be honest with her. She is just plainly asking to be treated as an equal and be given some honest explanations."What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street? Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep? What do you feel when you look in the mirror? Are you proud?"She is asking how he feels about the state of our country and if he feels he has done all that is in his power to fix our problem. She is asking if he is proud of the way he has handled himself and the issues of our nation. She is addressing the political corruption believed to have occurred during the Bush administration. She is challenging him to state that he is proud of his own actions."How do you sleep while the rest of us cry? How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye? How do you walk with your head held high? Can you even look me in the eye And tell me why?"Hudnall 3There are thousands of mothers who have lost their children in the war on Iraq; some are soldiers while others are innocent children who are bystanders. The line "How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?" is a rhetorical question about the issue of war and young men being killed in action. The rest of these statements address that Mr. Bush forgot to make good on his promises to help people. He had the power to change things for the better but failed to do so. When she asks him to look her in the eye, she is saying that she is aware that is he is not proud of his own actions."Dear Mr. President, Were you a lonely boy? Are you a lonely boy? Are you a lonely boy? How can you say No child is left behind? We're not dumb and we're not blind. They're all sitting in your cells While you pave the road to hell."These statements speak of the President's No Child Left Behind act. How can you implement new school policies and actually believe they will work when you are fighting a war which costs thousands of dollars and probably...
