Packet Twelve Essay

974 words - 4 pages

During the Romantic movement of literature, there were few instances where great poets knew who each other was, better yet were good friends. In Mary Shelley’s case, this happened. She was married to Percy Shelley of Ode to the West Wind, who was best friends with Lord Byron of She Walks in Beauty. The three writers were quite good friends, often talking about their love of certain texts. Mary had not really written a great piece of work like the other two, but it didn’t take her long to churn one out, which became her great tale of Frankenstein Or, the Modern Prometheus. Most don’t know that the title includes the Prometheus reference, but there is a reason it is there. One looks closely ...view middle of the document...

Frankenstein also disobeyed his Creator’s rules in a way be giving life to his monster. Many religious people had problems with this book because of this idea. He says at one point “Life and death appeared to me ideal bounds, which I should first break through, and pour a torrent of light into our dark world”. He had created an abomination with his monster, giving life to the dead not as a holy resurrection, but an an unholy scientific experiment. “Frankenstein has a little bit of the "creative fire of heaven" and learns to give life to a selfmade body” (Mary Shelley: Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus) It is Satanic, in their eyes, to do such a thing. “Prometheus displays qualities of a good creator, while Frankenstein exhibits characteristics to the contrary” (Frankenstein and Prometheus: Exposed as Creators). One for creating the monster, and two for digging up the graves of the beloved dead ones to create the monster. “One man's life or death were but a small price to pay for the acquirement of the knowledge which I sought, for the dominion I should acquire and transmit over the elemental foes of our race”. He does this to God like what Prometheus did to Zeus; told him to basically shove it, he’ll do what he wants to.

Yet, like Prometheus, Frankenstein gets punished for his act of creation. Prometheus, for his disobedience, gets chained to a cliff, and has an eagle eat his liver every day, which grows back every night, only to re-live the experience the next day. “The legend of Prometheus is a sad tale of the desire to do good punished for eternity” (Frankenstein as Prometheus). Now Frankenstein’s punishment isn’t like that, but it’s in its own way just as cruel. “I ought to be thy Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel…” The monster, who has been completely rejected by society due to his...
