Identify the health disparities uncovered in your community assessment.
In a community, such factors as poverty, racial/ethnic status, certain health problems, access to healthcare and the physical environment may contribute to health disparities (Anderson & McFarlane, 2011). Unfortunately, there were a number of health disparities identified in our community assessment of Talbot County.
We found income impacting the people of Talbot. The median income in Talbot County is $9,263, which is less than the Georgia average (“Talbot County,” 2013). Additionally, twenty one percent of the population lives below poverty level (“Talbot County,” 2013). Talbot County was found to be a financially disadvantaged community requiring a great deal of financial assistance to improve the overall health of the community.
Furthermore, the racial/ethnic status of the population contributes to health disparities with the majority of the population being African American (58.7%) and single (State & county,” 2013). There are slightly higher percentages of elderly residents in Talbot County (16.7%) compared to other counties in the state of Georgia (14%) (State & county,” 2013).
Also, Talbot County has a higher death rate (990.5) than the other counties or in the state of Georgia (923.5), with most deaths occurring as a result of cardiovascular disease (335) (“Talbot County," 2013). This is significant because we know that physical inactivity can lead to major health complications, the number one being cardiovascular disease.
Unfortunately, the county did not have any hospitals or nursing homes in 2011 (Vinson, 2013). There was also reported to be one practicing physician in Talbot County for a ratio of one physician per 6,865 people in 2010 (Vinson, 2013).
We found Talbot to have the poorest physical environmental to promote physical health in all of Georgia. Talbot County is considered a rural county with copious amounts of unused space and large distances between neighbors. Talbot has fewer residents per square mile compared (17.5) to other counties in the state of Georgia (193.6) (“State & county,” 2013). The residents have to travel out of the county for healthy alternatives.
