Hazel Scullion 3/11/14In this essay I am going to discuss 'the contribution that parents/guardians make to the development of self-esteem during childhood.'I will firstly explain what self-esteem is and the difference between low and high self-esteem. I will then go through the different types of parenting styles explaining what they are and how they affect the Childs self-esteem. I will also talk about conditioning, the different types and how they work. I will talk about Stanley coopersmiths experiment on self-esteem in middleclass boys and I will go through Erickson's theory on the eight stages in psychosocial development and how it is relevant to the development of self-esteem, and before I conclude my essay I will discuss how a social worker an contribute to someone's self-esteem.Our self-esteem is confidence in one's own worth or abilities and self-respect. Self-esteem is how we value ourselves; it is how we perceive our value to the world and how valuable we think we are to others. Self-esteem affects our trust in others, our relationships, our work, nearly every part of our lives. Positive self-esteem gives us the strength and flexibility to take charge of our lives and grow from our mistakes without the fear of rejection.some of the signs of positive self-esteem are confidence, self direction, non-blaming behaviour, awareness of personal strengths, ability to make mistakes and learn from them, ability to accept mistakes from others, Optimism, ability to solve problems, , ability to trust others, A good sense of personal limitations, Good self-care, and The ability to say noLow self-esteem is a debilitating condition that keeps individuals from realizing their full potential. A person with low self-esteem feels so poorly about him or herself, these feelings may actually cause the person's continued low self-esteem.Here are some signs of low self-esteem: Negative view of life, Perfectionist attitude, Mistrusting others, Blaming behaviour, Fear of taking risks, Feelings of being unloved and unlovable, Dependence - letting others make decisions , Fear of being ridiculedPeople with poor self-esteem rely on their present experiences (e.g. grades) to determine how they feel. They need positive external experiences to counteract the negative feelings (e.g. compliments). The good feelings however, are usually temporary.People with healthy self-esteem posses the ability to asses themselves accurately and accept who they are, they are able to acknowledge their strength but also accept their weaknesses, they believe they are worthy and worthwhileSelf-esteem evolves throughout our lives it is affected by our experiences and how they were dealt with.
