A piece of trash floats by like a tumbleweed in the hot and humid climate of the Philippines. “With small bare hands, they [the children] break light bulbs and pull the coiled copper from the bottoms.” (Lo) If you were a child born in the slums of the Philippines, this is how life would be like. These children have to be scavengers and find materials that they can sell to earn money. In the example above, the children find trash with copper and sell them for around $7. The contemporary industrial phenomenon where this takes place is the Payatas Dump. It is apparent that the Payatas is a hazardous and filthy junkyard; it has both negative and positive impacts on its inhabitants, and it can be ...view middle of the document...
This represents that this issue is not only country-wide, but also worldwide (Overdorf). Although the dump seems like it only has negative benefits on society, there are also positives.
This junkyard has affected the people living in the slums both positively and negatively. One way it has impacted them antagonistically is that they are exposed to harmful toxins when they for example, getting copper ready to sell (as mentioned in the introduction). The paupers that live near the dump make money by scavenging through the dump and finding anything that could be valuable, like copper. They then burn the copper which causes them to inhale harmful toxins, even the smallest children! CBS News says “the trash pickers’ bodies can quickly lose their resistance to the toxic effects of the smoldering copper”, which means that their health will be affected greatly (Lo). In contrast, the Payatas also affects its inhabitants positively. As mentioned before, the reason people migrated towards the dump was because they were able have a better living here than what they had before. On a different note, effort has been made and many changes have taken place to try to help the Payatas become more eco-friendly. As pronounced by the Government of Quezon City:
“Payatas is now green [...] its residents enjoy a park, where the old dumpsite used to be [...] There is a composting plant, greenhouses, plant nurseries” (The Payatas Dumpsite).
The Payatas has changed from a harmful and disgusting dump to many structures (ex. greenhouse) that can help the environment and the people around it. Overall, the Payatas has its benefits and disadvantages to its society.
There are many aspects in which this contemporary phenomenon can connect to that of the time of industrialization. One way in which it connects is how the hygiene was horrible and disease was easily spread....
