Performance enhancing drugs or PEDs have become all too prevalent in sports today. It seems like every time Sport’s Center or any sports program airs there is all something mentioned about PEDs. Some people say that they make the game more exciting and some say that it is cheating. Performance enhancing drugs have always tainted modern sports due to the types of steroids, athletes that use them, and widespread use.
Performance enhancing drugs are drugs that do exactly what they sound like. They enhance people’s performances. Whether that be in sports or in every day life. Around 15 million Americans’ use PEDs. About 1 billion plus was spent on legal human growth hormones throughout the US ...view middle of the document...
Although testing and bannings are helping the sport clean up, “Just because an athlete doesn't test positive doesn't mean they're clean”(Johnson 1).
There are heaps of steroids around, but more than one-hundred are banned by the MLB drug prevention. The main types of steroids are anabolic steroids, HGH, testosterone, and corticosteroids. Anabolic steroids stimulate proteins and build non-fat muscle mass. There are more than fifty anabolic steroids banned by the MLB drug prevention program. That list includes the following: androstanediol, stanozolol, and testosterone. There are also 30 types of stimulants banned. The rest include amphetamines, ephedrine, HGH, insulin-like growth factors, erythropoietin, two dozen diuretics, and hormone modulators.
Another commonly used steroid is tetrahydrogestrinone or THG.Tetrahydrogestrinone is a stimulant that helps boost the energy level of athletes or whoever uses it. THG was used by the some popular names. Both Barry Bonds and Marion Jones took THGs given to them by the
notorious BALCO. THG was a chemically made steroid. Chemists used the easy to get steroid, gestrinone, and added four hydrogen atoms. It is not known how many athletes took THG, but it was a popular steroid given out by BALCO.
Another type of frequently used steroids are corticosteroids. Like THGs, corticosteroids are also man-made. Corticosteroids resemble cortisol and increase strength. Cortisol is a hormone that the adrenal glans naturally produce. Corticosteroids are a drug mostly used for people with arthritis or some type of inflammation problem, but some athletes abuse it. Corticosteroids are easy for some athletes to get because of the common use in inflammation problems.
Testosterone is a male hormone. It is natural and regulates bone density, fat distribution, muscle strength, red cell production, and sex drive. When an athlete or regular person takes testosterone it helps the bulk up. Testosterone was improved by scientists in 1950s which gave it a stronger effect. Testosterone was first popular in the 1950s for bodybuilders, but is now popular in all sports. Big names like cyclist Floyd Landis and Lance Armstrong used testosterone. Landis was stripped of one Tour de France title, whereas Armstrong was stripped of seven.
Human growth hormones are one of the most popular steroids today. HGHs are taken by injection. They improve endurance and strength which is why they are so popular. HGH also helps with cell growth and regeneration. Part of why HGH is so popular is because of how easy it is to obtain. Any one can search “human growth hormones” and there are results of numerous different brands selling them. There are hundreds of different bodybuilding sites talking about the benefits of HGHs and how big it can get people, but they do not talk about the many effects.
