Personal Experience Essay

1187 words - 5 pages

“Don't be satisfied with stories, how things have gone with others. Unfold your own myth.” This quote ( from Essential Rumi by the poet and theologian, Rumi) is perhaps one of my favorite inspirational quotes. To me, it’s telling me that rather than read and hear and learn about what other people do and what other people can accomplish, that I should accomplish something myself. I should put the pen to paper and write my place out in history. Everyone has the potential to craft their own tale. But I want to do more than that. I want my story to be remembered throughout history. I want to do something important and meaningful with my life. With the right start I know that I, like everyone else, have the ability to create high mountains peaks and crystal-clear streams in my life. I can write the elements of plot that contain my life in any way that I please. And with this ability, I want to write something great.
However, if I wanted to become the author of my own life, what would my story even be about? Often when political scientists attempt to predict future events within the economy, many of them reflect on economic events of the past. Likewise, if I want a clear picture of what I’m going to be happy doing with my life, I should reflect on what I’ve been interested in up to this point. Throughout my life I’ve been very involved in drama. Plays, musicals, the school’s forensics team, you name it. If it’s drama related, I’ve probably tried it. I enjoy music as well. I’ve played piano for about eight years, and I sing a little, on occasion. But would I want to pursue a career in the arts? I’ve considered it, but I feel that science has been more of a true passion of mine. I’m absolutely fascinated with the human body. Particularly, the brain. Oh yes, the human brain, the sacred holder of all that man knows, and the only thing in the entire world that can learn about itself! How fantastic is this organ, something men have studied and learned so much about, but yet have so many more mysteries to uncover about it? I’ve been absolutely hypnotized by the brain’s uniqueness since I was about 12 years old. I’d done tons of research on it, wanting to learn everything that I could. At that age, I wanted to be a neurosurgeon. As I’ve gotten older though, my interest turned more from the brain to more specifically the mind. Biological Psychology has been my latest fascination, so I think I’m going to focus on that as my story’s exposition; beginning to learn about the mind and its biology.
Of course, my life involves more than me ogling at brain facts. I’m very involved in and outside of school. National honors Society, Drama Club, Taekwondo, and Academic Bowl are just a few of the things that I do. Of course, it’s easier to be involved in tons of clubs and activities when you’re not studying to gain a degree for your future career. Don’t get me wrong, I love being able to be parts of several groups. I plan on being a member of at least a few clubs or...
