Since the ancient times, Pyramids of Egypt ranked as the top wonders of the world and made Egypt very a significant and remarkable land over the world. The pyramids of Egypt were tombs of the Egyptian Pharaohs. They were built about 4600 years ago. Pyramids are famous as they are ancient, huge and strong. A lot of time, hard work and numerous lives of people were paid to build them. Pyramids have a square base and 4 triangular sides. They are built of rough stone materials such as limestone, graphite and basalt which weighted a lot of tons. The shape of the pyramids symbolised “the idea of new life, a mound of earth and the warmth of the sun”.
Pyramids are located in the deserts of Egypt, outside of the cities. There are many different pyramids in Egypt such as Giza pyramid, Sahara pyramid and Khufu’s pyramid. Among them, Giza pyramid is the most famous for its size. It is originally 481 feet tall and the length of each side of its base is 755 feet. Giza pyramid was built by around 2,300,00 limestone blocks which weighted about 2.5 tons each.
During the ancient times, the Egyptians built the pyramids as tombs to bury their kings and queens. Since the coronation of a new king and queen, the Egyptians started building the pyramids in order to be ready by the death of their new king and queen.The Egyptians believed that their kings will rise once again with great powers after death. For that reason, pyramids were also known as “Houses of eternity”.
They believed that the greater or bigger the pyramid was, the more powerful it could be.
Not only the kings and queens but also the servants were buried inside the pyramids. This is because of a belief that the servants will serve the Egyptian kings and queens in their next lives.
Inside the pyramids, the mummies of the Egyptian king, queen and servant were buried. Along with the royals, their valued items such as boats, clothing, precious gems, jewelleries and other luxury items were stored inside. The most important item in the pyramids is a sarcophagus which was used to protect the mummy of the Pharaohs. On the walls, the ancient Egyptian literature and statues which explained their history was carved into symbols and pictures on the walls. There are also many different passageways to access to the chambers inside the pyramids. Nowadays, the pyramids are empty inside as all the items are showcased at the Egyptian museum.
At the pyramids, the visitors can go inside the pyramids and observe the internal structure. However, the visitors are not allowed to enter inside all of the Giza Pyramids. The number of people who can enter the Great Pyramid of Khufu is limited to 150 people in the morning and afternoon.
