Personal Self-Regulation
Surprisingly, when considering this subject I was surprised to find that I have used self-regulation practices often in my lifetime. From altering my behavior and compromising in my marriage to accepting my family life and making changes to my outlook, I have done this many times and until now never understood the proper verbiage to explain it. When weighing all of the examples that come to mind, I will use the one that was both the hardest and simplest of all. I have always struggled to maintain my weight. In high school I was not overweight, not model skinny but, I had a pretty good figure. However, I was also a lot more active. I would walk from school to work over a mile almost every day, I was participating in a lot of activities, and of course I had teenage metabolism on my side. After high school was extremely stressful time for me. I was working as a waitress in a bar and ate there almost every night, I now had a car and was no longer walking, and in general I was making a lot of unhealthy decisions. Before I knew it I was in my late 20’s and about 65 pounds overweight. I remember saying to myself over the years each time I grew in a size, if I reach double digits I will do something about it. I never did until the day I went to the store to get some new things for a big vacation we were planning, grabbed the size 14, and it was too small. What had I done to myself? This was the day that everything changed. I started slow, I convinced my husband to go up to the mall with me and walk. However, he quickly became bored and I started to look for other alternatives. I started actually reading the boxes of the food I bought. After some trial and error, I decided to concentrate strictly on the number of calories I was consuming. In addition, I began a workout routine every single day after work. Being shy and very conscientious, I decided that a gym was not really for me. Instead, I found Yoga and Pilates. I also set two goals for myself; first, I bought a pair of shorts that I wanted to wear to Florida on our vacation and second, I wanted to wear a bikini. I tried those shorts on every day until they fit and then they didn’t, they were too big. I actually ended up losing all sixty five pounds, and wearing a size 4. I did not even wear that in high school. Needless to say, that behavior was very regulatory and after our vacation, not realistically something I could keep up with.
