Personal Statement Essay

1494 words - 6 pages

Ever since I graduated from high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do or who I wanted to be in life. All I knew is that I wanted to do something that was worth while and would make a difference in today’s society. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to go to a community college or a university. I would weigh my options between the two. I would say to myself, “If I go to a community college, I would graduate quicker. But if I go to a university, it would take longer.” In order to help make a quick and effective decision, I began to ask questions and finding out more information. After carefully reviewing all advantages or disadvantages of both types of schooling, I decided a university. When I first came to Winston Salem State University, I had so many emotions that I was feeling. For example, I was scared, excited, interested, etc. But they say all those type of emotions that a student feels is common for freshmen. After a couple months, Winston Salem State surely made me feel welcome and I no longer had any negative emotions.
As a freshman, I thought I was sure about which major to choose and stick with. The major I first started out with was the field of Nursing and with a minor in Spanish. I wanted to be a pediatric nurse, because I loved children. I felt I had to help other children who were in need of help. But all that changed after I finally saw what nursing was all about and all the rules or requirements that came with it. For example, on a test, you could not make below a grade of a “C”. If you do then you automatically fail the course. Then there was a certain way you had to look. For example, tattoos could not be visible; no rings unless it’s a wedding ring, nails had to be cut at a certain length, etc. Lastly, there were only a certain number of slots for upper division nursing. Let’s say if there were 400 nursing majors, only half of them could make into the upper division nursing. For the ones who didn’t make it, they would have to wait another year to try again. I just thought all these rules or regulations were stupid and ridiculous. An example would be the nursing students who couldn’t get into upper division and would have to wait another year. I feel like they worked so hard and spent all the time to try to get into the upper division and then for them to tell the students that they didn’t get in, is unbelievable. After all that nonsense, I decided to change my major to psychology.
I am not going to lie, at first I didn’t want to major in psychology because I wasn’t interested in the field. But once I began taking classes for the field, I became interested and wanting to learn more about psychology. Since psychology was so broad, I wasn’t sure what career I would make out of having psychology degree. All that changed once I was in counseling psychology. I was sure I wanted to either be a high school counselor or a forensic psychologist. The main reason I wanted to be a high school counselor is because I wanted to try...
