Personality Essay

1663 words - 7 pages

When asked to describe myself in 20 words, I was then given a chance to think about how I viewed myself. Out of the 75 personality traits, I really did try to choose the words that stayed true to my personality, as opposed to choosing flattering words to describe how I am. Honestly, I found myself settling with some traits because I needed to fill my quota of 20 circled words. Some traits fell hand-in-hand, such as candid and truthful, but I feel as if both of those words described me well. The idea of describing someone’s personality usually means that a person fulfills a specific adjective’s definition in a consistent way. With the given 75 traits, the 20 circled, in my opinion, describe me well.
Repercussions have a very significant impact on my actions. Being a persistent person, it is rare that I take “no” for an answer. Operant conditioning, a form of learning where voluntary responses are then controlled by a consequence, causes me to continue to be a persistent person. If I really want something, I will try my hardest to get it. Positive reinforcement rewards me when I am persistent with something. For example, if I am trying to fix something myself, I will try and try until I complete my task. If I really want something bad enough, such as fixing something of mine that is broken, I will not stop until it is fixed. I am then positively reinforced when I reach my goal of fixing whatever was broke because I received a favorable outcome. When dealing with interpersonal persistence, my consistent personality trait is sometimes strengthened because I am usually able to reach a goal by not giving up when I want something and another person is involved. For example, if my friend and I wanted to go out and do something, I would try to find plans for my friend and me however I could, getting a hold of people via text or call, to figure out a solution to our bordness. Punishment also plays a large part in being persistent. Most people get annoyed when someone, such as myself, who will not give up. Despite the level of difficulty, I will continually strive until I am satisfied, sometimes causing an unpleasant outcome out of the situation. Annoying people is my punishment when being too persistent. Operant conditioning has the ability to either strengthen my persistent nature, or deter my pushiness.
When trying new things, it is natural for a person to be hesitant. In the text, chapter 2 states that classical conditioning usually appears to be responsible for realistic and moderate anxiety responses. When meeting new people, or even trying new things, that can cause acute anxiety in a person. Being nervous about trying new things or meeting new people is a natural response in certain situations, and suspicion is a semi-decent way to describe me at times because I am always trying to question and examine things and people. Let us say that I am out at a social gathering and a group of people spark a conversation with me. My initial response is to try...
