Personality Type Theory Essay

What is a personality type? In psychology, "personality type refers to the psychological classification of different types of people" (en.wikipedia). Personality types are different from personality traits, there are many different types of personalities, and when different personalities unite in the pursuit of a common goal, the traits may be congruent and balanced, or troublesome and disorganized. Understanding the different personality types can help a group or team balance its assortment of unique temperaments and talents. The different personality types may also help explain why and how individual group members might react to specific suggestions and circumstances. When understanding ones personality type you can identify their traits, strengths and weaknesses and their professional work dynamics. You can also get an idea of how their group interaction might be measured as well as what their levels of group participation, leadership, and motivational skills in regard to the workplace. Organizations spend millions of dollars every year trying to locate and recruit the right type of personalities to fit their company. There is an importance for organizations to understand the different types of personalities; they hope to obtain a better understanding of what exactly it is that drives and motivates their employees. The drive and motivational factors of ones personality can help the bottom line in determining the financial success of the organization.It is important to have different personalities when working in teams or groups. The different personalities can help determine the different roles and responsibilities of the group members. It is necessary to understand the different theories, traits and behaviors of individuals in order to appreciate the different types of personalities. The roles and responsibilities of the group members can be directly linked to their personality. When interacting within a group and when giving the opportunity to choose specific roles and responsibilities, members tend to pursue the roles that they feel most comfortable with. There are two traits used to determine the behaviors and personality types of group members, these traits of personality are Extrovert or Introvert. "Extroverts are outgoing; they talk more, gesture more, and can become quite enthusiastic during a discussion.Extroverts get their energy by being with people. They enjoy solving problems in groups and like to involve others in projects. In a group setting, extroverts may have a tendency to dominate the discussion without listening to others. At the same time, they can be terrific energizers and contributors. Introverts think before they speak. Although they may have a great deal to offer in a group discussion, they can find the experience exhausting.
