Philosophy Of Management Essay

I, Christopher Joseph Hoffman, have been a manager before. As a non-commissioned officer in the United States Army for nearly seven years, I had to develop a style that not only supported the needs of the unit, but also the needs of those under me. Now that I am a civilian, I take a lot of what I have learned in that time and incorporate it into how I would lead others now. My philosophy of management is team-centric, but not just rooted there, but is a continuously evolving style. My philosophy is changing as I proceed in the challenges of being a leader.
Like many before me, I began to develop my philosophy long before I was approached as a leader. As a young employee working in the retail industry, I learned that if I was to become a leader had a dual role, care for my team and care for my clientele. In order to be successful, I had to take care of both. My supervisors would find the delicate balance between the two and continuously be adjusting to find that perfect balance between them both. I realized that as managers, like our employees, that we can make mistakes, and by doing so, learn to be better than we were before. A good manager will not only recognize a mistake, but acknowledge it, take responsibility for it and learn from it. Dennis Bakke suggested in his book “Joy at Work” that leaders are also humble from their core. Such humility underlies our desires as leaders and managers to make others do better. By sharing our experiences, we allow our team members to learn from our mistakes and in essence, become better as a result. Managers are also servants, as compared to the Gospel of Matthew, in chapter 23, verse 11, which states, “The greatest among you shall be your servant.” That verse implies to me that as managers and leaders, we are also servants to those who we lead. As a leader, we must be willing to do what we ask of those we lead. Dean Waskoiwiak of Encore Technologies, supports this thinking by suggesting that in order to leaders to be effective, they must recognize and accept that they must be able to lead themselves first. To me, a good leader must be self-assured and self-confident, so that they can assure and show confidence in their subordinates. 2 Timothy 2:15 states “do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” Humility, care for my team and service became the building blocks to the foundation to my philosophy of management.
A second point of my philosophy of leadership and of management is that we, as leaders, must love what we do. Bakke wrote his entire book based on this. We have to enjoy time with our personnel under us, not shy away from it.
