Beauty is a concept. An idea that changes from person to person. We put on makeup, do our hair, paint our nails, and buy the latest clothing in an effort to satisfy those around us and conform to their idea of physical beauty. By doing this, we often forget who we are and lose our inner beauty. Although many people focus on physical beauty, inner beauty is more important because it is permanent and a representation of a person’s true self.

How many times have we heard or said the clique “don’t judge a book by it’s cover,” yet we focus so much of our attention on our physically appearance. Everyday we encounter images in the media that make us believe we have to look a certain way. Physical ...view middle of the document...

All the while we change from ourselves to someone who is unrecognizable in the mirror.

Having such an importance on physically beauty in our society creates pressure for people to be physically beautiful. This pressure to be physically beautiful creates problems when people are willing to go to extreme lengths to be beautiful. People develop eating disorders, get plastic surgery, and become someone they are not in an effort to become physically beautiful. Physically beauty is important when it comes to taking care of yourself, but going too far can have serious repercussions.

When we look at someone, we do not see who they really are, how they treat others, or their struggles. All of these and much more make up a person’s inner beauty. Inner beauty is often times pushed aside and forgotten. Society does not put importance on inner beauty. Whereas we constantly get the message from media that only physical beauty is important. We do not realize inner beauty is more important. Never have I seen anything promoting self acceptance and inner beauty.

Nevertheless, inner beauty is a representation of a person’s true self and is noticed later after you get to know someone.
