Playing video games is a popular pastime for kids and teenagers, one that is causing much concern for teachers and educators. The most popular games generally are filled with violence and gore, whether they be about war, street life, or otherwise. All over the world, teenagers and children (79% of them!) fill their free time with explosions, gunfire, and fistfights, and it all takes place behind the relative safety of a screen and controller. It can become so addictive that they play upwards of eight hours a week. The problems induced by video games are not only in the mind, but also in the body. The study finds that teenagers who play games for extended periods of time have an increased heart rate, more trouble sleeping, and have more trouble focusing. The increased heart rate and blood pressure have health consequences that last long into the future, such as an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and an exacerbation of mental illness. The lack of sleep affects your perceptions and reactions to stimuli as well, leading the video-game player to become irritable and jumpy. Finally, the trouble focusing that is invoked through playing these violent games, with all the flashing and movement, can have disastrous effects in the classroom, affecting their ability to learn and keep on track with assignments. In all, the physical stresses from these games are too big of a price to pay for hours of diversion.
