Walter Whitman Junior ate four raw eggs for breakfast every day for the last twenty years of his life. Also, after his death, an autopsy was done showing that his lungs had shrunk to one eighth of their normal breathing capacity. More importantly he was not just a, but the noteworthy father of w on the beach looking at the fall sky at sunset. The dark cloudy sky is coming in from the west, and the child thinks that the stars are gone for good. The father explains that they are immortal and will soon return, but in the last stanza the father suggests that there is a deity more immortal than the stars, but does not say what. In “On the Beach at Night” Whitman expresses the unexplainable connection between man and nature and how it raises a sense of wonder.
Whitman paints a picture encompassing the mystical natural world and the always curious human being through the use of alliteration, onomatopoeia, diction, repetition of words, and imagery. The author breaks up his poem by writing short stanzas, followed by longer stanzas. In the first two shorter stanzas, (three lines) he has the third word in the first line rhyme with the third word in the third line. For example, line one reads “On the beach at night” and the third line reads “Watching the east, the autumn sky” (1,3). Beach and east have the same vowel sound making them assonance . He writes a similar assonance using the words “beach” and “weep” in the same format in lines eleven through thirteen. The use of assonances emphasizes the feelings that the words himself portray. In the longer two stanzas he uses two onomatopoeias that continue the feeling being described in the poem. Lines fourteen and fifteen contain “weep” suggesting someone is crying, but also gives the reader an idea of the sound they are making. In line twenty six “whisper” is written, the verb establishes a sense of uncertainty of what is to come and undisclosed information being told about whom the person Whitman speaks of. Whitman puts a spin in the poem by writing in old Shakespearean English in the fifth stanza. The stanza interprets to “are you crying because Jupiter is not visible anymore? Do you consider this the death of the stars?” In the sixth stanza, he gives background information in parentheses. Why he does this I don’t know but it really catches the readers attention.
Another way Whitman contributes meaning to the poem is through the repetition of words. Words are repeated constantly throughout the piece. There are three categories that these repeated words fit into. The first is scenery, what the people on the beach are seeing: “beach” “night” “east” “sky” “clouds” “star” “sun” “sisters the Pleiades” and “Jupiter” are all mentioned at least two times. These words set the stage for the rest of the writing by establishing the main topics that Whitman will be discussing throughout the poem.
