The common people of America could be partaking in a human experiment (“Genetically modified food”). GMO stands for genetically modified organism, which are plants and animals that are genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses, and other plants and animals (“GMO Facts”). They are linked to various health problems and are in 80% of conventional processed foods (Renter). The amount of people with three health issues or more in the United States increases dramatically since the introduction if GMOs into American produce (“10 Reasons”). Much like Monsanto, one of the largest GM food growing companies, biotech companies stated the herbicide Agent Orange used in the Vietnam War was harmless. Monsanto uses the same research techniques designed to avoid discovering problems with their genetically modified food products. The genes added to the food transfers into the DNA of the live bacteria inside of people (“10 Reasons”). Most certified biologists agree that altered genes from genetically modified foods can mix with other organisms and cause health concerns (“Genetically Modified Organisms” 443). Rats fed GM potatoes for twenty- eight days resulted with bleeding stomachs (“65 Health). GM foods are linked to, immune system disorders, organ damage, accelerated aging and infertility (“10 Reasons”). They have also been proven to induce allergies in people, such as the allergy to gluten. The FDA scientists have tried to warn the FDA bureaucrat about the potential dangers of ingesting GM foods, but they disregarded the evidence and approved genetically modified foods for sale and consumption (“Genetically Modified Food”).
Moreover, not labeling a GM food as such denies consumers certain information that may influence their decision of purchase. Labeling a GM food as such is not required in the United States (“Non GMO”). Monsanto refuses to label their food because they fear people will think their food is unhealthy when in reality, if their food was as wonderful as they claim, they would be proud to label their food as a product made with GMOs (“Genetically Modified food”). Secondly, the FDA does not require safety studies or labeling because they believe GM foods are not very much different from regular foods. This proves most of America is not aware of the dangers of GMOs or even what GMOs are. This is partially due to attempts by media to expose the horrors of GMOs being censored. Also, companies will fire and cut the funding of the scientists who discover unfavorable facts relating to GM foods (“10 Reasons”).
