Aside from parents, teachers have one of the most important jobs in the world. InTexas alone they are accountable for the education of nearly 4 million students. (Officeof State Senator Jeff Wentworth).Unfortunately, money can make the difference betweenmediocrity and burnout of teaching or exemplary teaching performance andaccomplishment. Do teachers need be paid on the progression of their students? Or isdifferent plan needed to help further the future of teachers and the intelligence of theirstudents. Laws that have been experimented with all over the United States show howhard the obstacle is to overcome. Many teachers in high crime and low budget schoolsget different treatment than those private school teachers and high-income public schools.How can it be made equal for all students and their teachers? Linda Darling-Hammond is a professor of education at Teachers College, Columbia University, and co-director of the National Center for Restructuring Education, Schools, and Teaching(NCREST). She states, "As people suddenly feel that everyone is entitled to the samequality of education, but the demands of society have changed dramatically. We'removing from a manufacturing age, which needed a lot of semi-skilled workers, to aninformation age, where virtually everyone has to be prepared to think and solve problemsand work on levels that were reserved for a few in the past. Schools have to prepare allstudents for thinking work. The task no longer is to sort out those who will get high-status jobs requiring education; the task is to develop the talents of every individual tomeet society's needs. (Hammond). Society wants kids to be the best they can be, learnall they can, and enjoy it at the same time. So why is it such a problem to provide? Manyteachers are paid on merit pay, or pay-for-performance. Studies show that this is not theanswer sought. Need is a policy that lets the head of the schooldistricts see first hand what kind of teachers they have and to what extreme they arewilling to go. Who evaluated these teachers? In elementary and middle school it was theprincipal, high school the principals and vice principals, and in college it is us, thestudents, who fill out the form of how well liked the teachers is and how decent of a jobthey do. How accurate are these results, and how worthy are the questions?A policy is needed that pays teachers on yes, achievement on theirstudents but also the time and dedication they put into it. Salaries of teachers should bedetermined on experience, budgets, achievements of the students based on other thingsthan just test scores, and the overall continuance of evaluation. If teachers can beevaluating on a regular basis by their own peers as well as superiors and students moreideas and progress could be accomplished. Bonuses could be offered for specialachievements or on extra skills the teachers acquire.
