Evo Morales stated, “Sooner or later, we will have to recognize that the Earth has rights too, to live without pollution. What mankind must know is that human beings cannot live without Mother Earth, but the planet can live without humans” (Pollution Quotes, 2013). Hence, attention must be provided to this devastating issue. Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that causes adverse changes (Wieman, 2013). There are numerous types of pollution, such as light, air, land, water, noise, thermal and radioactive pollution. In an article, the author highlighted that according to Richard Buckminster Fuller, “Pollution is nothing but the resources we are not harvesting, we allow them to disperse because we’ve been ignorant of their value” (Farrell, 1971, p. 52). Pollution is created mostly by human actions, but can also be a result of natural disasters. Pollution can harm the environment of the world and its inhabitants in many ways. Pollution has a detrimental effect on any living organism in an environment, making it virtually impossible to sustain life (Enclyopedia - Pollution, 2008).
Pollution is a major problem in The Bahamas, and worldwide. The Bahamas is a beautiful archipelago consisting of seven hundred islands and cays surrounded by water, and is known for its water, sand and sunny climate (Tourism Today, 2011). The Bahamas is a less developed country and has experience the majority of situations, and snags that more developed countries has face, such as pollution. Pollution in The Bahamas is a very important problem for its affects the citizens of The Bahamas, and the Bahamian waters, lands and air quality. The Bahamas has a pollution problem because there are large amount of garbage exposed amongst the land, oil is spilling, fishermen using dangerous methods, sewage is dump in water, the garbage dump is burning vigorously, large amount of exhaust is let of from cars and cruise ships, and the burning of fossil fuels. In the Bahamas, there are many important resources that are being polluted and are affected by pollution in the air, water, and land, such as ground water, surface water, air quality, mangrove, coral reefs, and sea grasses. There are numerous types of pollution, but due to the activities mention above, The Bahamas has three majors’ well-known types of pollution, which are land, water and air. The Bahamas has face land pollution due to the Bahamian littering, water pollution due to the recent oil spills, and sewage, and air pollution mainly by burning of fossil fuel and exhaust from cruise ships and cars.
Firstly, land pollution is the contamination of the soil that prevents natural growth and balance in the land whether it is used for cultivation, habitation, or a wildlife preserve (Nathanson, 2013, para. 1).
