Pollution Issues Shown To Kids Essay

1049 words - 5 pages

The Lorax (1972) is a children’s movie that addresses environmental struggles that occur daily and the consequences that follow those actions. The movie starts out in the middle of the forest and a young boy is waiting to hear a story told by the Once-ler. The Once-ler is a green creature that is the cause for the extinction of a particular tree, a truffula tree. As the story begins, he discusses how the forest was a flourishing ecosystem. The carbon cycle was being disturbed. Eventually, the Swomee swans had to fly away to a less polluted place. The last being in the forest that was forced to leave were the hummingfish. All the gump and waste the Once-ler was producing was being spit out into the hummingfish’s river. The gump was clumping up their gills making it impossible for them to breathe. The water pollution had gotten out of hand. The had to leave as well. No one was left in the forest. No truffula trees, Bar-ba-loots, Swomee swans, or hummingfish. Just the Once-ler and the Lorax. There wasn’t any biodiversity left. There wasn’t even anyone to buy any thneeds left because there were no more truffula trees. Finally, the Once-ler learns. He learns that the pollution he is letting off from his factory is not only hurting the creatures, but it is also hurting the environment. Hurting the environment leads to a chain of hurt that is never ending. “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe” (Muir).
The carbon cycle is essential to the ecosystem. In the carbon cycle, carbon moves between air, water, soil, and organisms. A perfect example of this from the movie The Lorax (1972) would be the when the air is polluted, the Swomee swans have to move because the air is so heavily polluted. Also, another example would be the truffula trees. The trees absorb carbon dioxide and let off oxygen that we humans and other organisms breathe. But, if there is too much carbon dioxide in the air, the trees cannot absorb it all. That can be bad for organisms. For an ecosystem to be balanced, the carbon cycle has to be in process.
Biodiversity is shown throughout the movie and what happens when it is hindered by development. Biodiversity is usually known and the number of different species in a given area. The numbers can vary. But, in the...
