Pope Francis who's full name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio is currently the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church. Bergoglio was born on December 17, 1936 to Mario Jose Bergoglio and Regina Maria Sivori. Francis was the first Pope that has ever been from the Americas, since his birthplace was Buenos Aires, Argentina, so this makes him the first non-European Pope in over one thousand years. In this Pope’s childhood he overcame a serious and almost fatal problem. Francis had to have a lung removed at a young age caused by serious infection. After completing and graduating from high-school, Bergoglio enrolled in the University of Buenos Aires, where in time he had received a masters degree in chemistry and worked briefly as a chemical technician and nightclub bouncer before deciding to go to seminary. Three years after this Bergoglio was moving higher and higher up the chain on his road to becoming Pope and then took the title of Cardinal as granted by the Pope John Paul II in February 2001, and became the Cardinal-priest of Saint Robert Bellarmine.
Pope Francis’s rode to Pope keeps getting closer and closer to the destination and in 2005 Bergoglio was named President of the Bishops’ conference of Argentina and serving his position there until 2011. In 2005 Bergoglio was a close runner up in the election of the new Pope after Pope John Paul II’s death having the second most votes beaten by Pope Benedict XVI also known as Joseph Ratzinger. He then earned the reputation of a doctrinal conservative.
Finally becoming pope on March 13,2013 Jorge Bergoglio was named the two hundred and sixtieth Pope. Pope Francis had chosen the Title ,Francis, in honor of St. Francis of Assisi of Italy who was a catholic preacher in the 12th and 13th centuries. His first address to the catholic church after he was elected was, “As you know, the duty of the conclave was to appoint a bishop of Rome. It seems to me that my brother cardinals have chosen one who is from faraway. ... Here I am. I would like to thank you for your embrace.”(-Pope Francis) After his election of pope many stated that he was “A major change in direction for the better.”(survey of Pope Francis) and was viewed 85% positive in the surveys.
One of the first major events that The pope had hosted was a prayer rally. In September 2013, Francis called for many to join him in praying for peace in Syria. The Pope held a special vigil in St. Peter's Square on September 7, which was attended by an astonishing 100,000 people. In all this pope so far has been influential to hundreds of thousands. Although I am not Catholic I respect him and how he is so humble because of his home life as a child and how he has been so influential in the catholic church.
