Porn And Its Side Effects Essay

The Role of Censorship on the Use of Pornography
With the increase in pornography, there is a great need to come up with a way of dealing with this social problem. One of this is the use of censorship. This refers to the control of information and how it is distributed in the society. Historically, this method has always been viewed as dictatorship. In this case however, it is the best method of ensuring that young people are not exposed to pornographic materials. In the past, the use of censorship was used to examine content in television, film, books, magazines, radio programs and other types of communication in order to prevent offensive or objectionable ideas. This helps in protecting ...view middle of the document...

It is believed that if pornography harms other people, then censoring it might be too dangerous. Most liberals assert that it is quite difficult to provide a legal definition of pornography and the law might censor other materials such as important literary, art or political work. It will not be very clear on the kind of materials that will fall under the law while people may be afraid to produce, publish or say things that might be viewed as pornographic, since they will be afraid of prosecution (West). Moreover, if censorship increases, people will be more curious about pornography, meaning increased usage. There will therefore be a back and forth struggle with no real solution to the problem (Penny). Schools and institutions, especially libraries, can play a great role by ensuring that scholarly information is controlled through quality assurance by peer reviews (Zalta).
Those who are against censorship assert that as much as pornography is violent, degrading and offensive, the use of pornography should not be restricted to adults who are mentally competent on the grounds that others view it as unworthy. The law should not be used to support moral majorities while suppressing the opinions and taste of the minority groups. Furthermore, it is not right to force individual moral convictions on other people with the use of law. As much as people may disapprove the use of pornography, the users have their own rights. Liberals therefore support personal freedom and are against the regulation of this freedom by the state. The only way that this freedom is to be interfered with is if the use of pornography causes harm to other people (West).
Censorship may not be the best solution for pornography because in a way, young people will always find a way to get hold of explicit materials. If parents want their children to stop accessing pornographic materials, they can do this by installing a personal filtering software in their personal computers. A reason for this is that censorship on a wide scale always comes with a hidden agenda, mostly political. This has been quite evident in countries such as Australia when it blacklisted some sites. Activists later found out that some of these sites were not even pornographic in nature, but rather an attempt by some individuals to block the websites. Among the sites on the list...
