Poverty in the United States raises a number of challenges. Poverty is the origin of disorders in the country and to the surprise of many, results shows that the United States has a higher level of poverty than most rich nations in the world. The income of the household, unemployment, lack of education, population and the disasters of the environment measures poverty just to name a few. The Federal Government official poverty threshold in the United States is $24,000.00 for a family of four. This is based on the head of households working at minimum wage and holding more than 1 to 2 jobs. Meanwhile, the percentage of people in poverty perceived to be a problem in urban and inner city environments.
More than 46 million Americans live in poverty. The amount of poverty is at its highest since 1960. In Virginia, the state to which I live, ranks 12th in the country to poverty, which imposes far-reaching hardships, not for just the poor but the entire community. Poverty has a significant impact on our society causing children to suffer from poor nutrition, academic failure amongst our teenagers, while adult women and men suffer from emotional distress. Poverty is influence by the economic recession experienced by our country. The poverty rate in the United States is holding steady and gratefully not becoming a larger issue than we can manage. What is true is that there is also a greater likelihood that African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans face poverty, because a single woman heads many of these families.
