Poverty In “Flavio’s Home”: Is There An Answer? English 101 Research Paper

1048 words - 5 pages

Poverty is the lack of money, need or scarcity. In America this definition apply to over 12.7% of its people. Poverty is not something that has recently become an issue, it has been around for many years. For many people who live in America, to live in poverty means they live paycheck to paycheck. In most cases, most people find themselves without income and are unable to support themselves and their families. Poor people are often looked upon for the state they are in rather than how they got there and how they can be helped to get out. America is suspicious of the both the poor and helping them. However there have been programs implemented to help the less fortunate. Programs such as Social Security, Food Stamps, and housing assistance have helped lower the high risk of poverty. These programs have helped but are not enough to eliminate poverty. America and its government along with the poor need to work together to find a better way. Over the time, there are many ways to end the poverty, for some reason these ways were never proved. The poverty in “Flavio’s Home” could have been resolved if unemployment decreased, better education was given, and medical expenses were reduced.
Many people throughout America are in poverty because they are unemployed or underemployed and live in areas where economic opportunities are severely limited. However, the unemployed are not the only people who live in poverty. There are more family who have jobs and do not have enough money to feed their family or buy some things for their family. “ILO reports say that in 2007 approximately 1.2 billion people were working but earning only two dollar per day” (Alters). There are more family who have jobs and do not have enough money to feed their family or buy some things for their family. “How much do you earn a day? Gallo asked. Seventy five cents. On a good day maybe a dollar” (Parks 98). Flavio’s parents do not make enough money to feed their family. Some days they have only that much money that he can only buy foods for their family nothing else. If the unemployment was lower more people can get in jobs and make good money and peoples can get out of poverty slowly.
Poverty increases the chance of getting ill because of poor nutrition, overcrowding, and lack of clean water. According to krishna, “one third of the world’s poor were not born into poverty, they fell into it. The main cause of poverty is medical care” (Krishna). That means those people fell into poverty due to expensive medical care. The cost of medical care is rising, which makes it difficult for the poor families to get medical care. This leads the family members to get in an illness and forced to not go to the doctor because they do not have any money to pay the medical bills. The same thing happens in the “Flavio’s Home” by Gordon Parks. Flavio is very sick and his parents do not have enough money to go in the hospital and pay the medical bill. “I am afraid you are too late. He is...
