India is a place of extreme poverty and no hope for most that are poor. In India, many orphans roam the streets and many of the poor have to sleep on the streets in rural areas because they do not have jobs to support themselves. In India the people that do not have enough money to feed themselves will most likely die of starvation. Sadly, India is home to one-third of the world’s poor population.
India is in southeastern Asia and consists of twenty-eight states, seven union territories, and one national capital region. It consists of 1.2 billion people with fifty-one births every minute. The people of the country represents seventeen percent of the world’s total population. Of the billion people, 300 million of them are poor. Most of India’s poor people live in rural areas. Some of the poorest areas in India are Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal.
One of the more surprising facts about India is that is has the largest illiteracy rate in the world. Years ago if someone wanted to get educated he or she would have to go to the house of a teacher and request teaching. If the teacher agreed to teach the student he or she would have to stay at the teacher’s house and do work and chores, but today India has a modern education system including an English class brought to India in the 1830s by Lord Thomas Babbington Macaulay (Dr. V. Sasi Kumar). Although there is a modern education in India certain classes of India will not receive a good education because of the social structure.
A large part of poverty in India has to do with the caste system. The caste system is India's way of ranking people socially. There are five social classes in the caste system. At the top of the social classes is the Brahmins which are the priests. Second highest is the Kshatriyas, which are the warriors and rulers. Third on the list is the Vaisyas who are skilled traders and merchants and would be essentially the middle class. This class also contains minor officials.
